The Kabul University

The Kabul University (KU) is located in Kabul, capital of Afghanistan. It was founded in 1931 but officially opened for classes in 1932. Kabul University is currently attended by approximately 7,000 students, of which 1,700 are women. The university is still recovering from the long period of war and chaos in the country. The main building was rebuilt about 500 meters from the old one, which has almost the same design.
Kabul University consists of 14 faculties in fields of Agriculture, Economics, Pharmacy, Islamic Studies, Law, Language and Literature, Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Journalism, Veterinary medicine, Social Science, Psychology, Geosciences and Fine Arts.

History;
Kabul University was established in 1931 during the reign of Mohammed Nadir Shah and then Prime Minister Mohammad Hashim Khan, opening its doors one year later to students from across the country. Having benefited from partnerships with the governments of France, Germany, Russia, and the United States the university became one of the finest institutions of its kind in Asia, the intellectual heart of the country.
In the 1960s foreign-educated scholars populated the campus, exposing the new generation to new topics such as communism, feminism and capitalism. Students influenced during this era included Ahmad Shah Massoud, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, Dr. Faiz Ahmad, and Saydal Sokhandan.
Many different political groups were influenced in the University such as Khaliqis, Parchamis, Sholayees, Ikhwanis, and etc.
In a clash between Ikhwanis and Sholayees, a poet named Saydal Sokhandan was killed by Gulbuddin Hekmatyar in the 1970s. Saydal was fired upon and shot by Gulbuddin during an argument.

Rebuild
It is estimated that the university will need $64 million US dollars to function again on a basic level. In January 2004, the campus had only 24 computers and one stethoscope. As part of its recovery program, Kabul University has established partnerships with four foreign universities, including Purdue University and the University of Arizona.

Kandahar University (KU) was established in 1990, at a time when the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) was in power under President Mohammad Najibullah. Dr. Tooryalai Wesa, who returned to the country after 13 years and is the current governor of Kandahar province, was the first Chancellor of Kandahar University. It is believed that he will help in the development and progress of the university.

Kandahar University provides areas of study in Agriculture, Medicine, Engineering and Education. The university has future plans to launch faculties in the fields of Economy, Computer Science and Islamic Studies.

Kandahar University officially started with the faculty of Agriculture in 1991. The Faculty of Medicine was also launched in 1994. Due to lack of classes and hostel facilities, a specific area was selected for the University in the north-west of Kandahar city. The work of constructing the new campus started during the governance of Gul Agha Sherzai who strongly supported and contributed Kandahar University in different aspects. The current Campus of the University covers an area of more than 600,000 m2. The University has 11 buildings, of which one is the Administration and Chancellor’s office, four buildings for a hostel, one for each faculty and one for the Central Library. The University also has a separate girls' hostel. There are some other structures located in the campus. The most important among them is the tomb of Allama Abdul Shakoor Rishad baba who was a well known writer, artist and poet of Afghanistan. There is also a huge mosque located beside the University for attending the Eidgah pray each year.

The Canadian government in 2008 built a three-km perimeter of stone, brick and iron around the school campus. It has been dubbed the Great Wall of Kandahar. The new wall addresses a security and other concerns hampering the school’s development.
